I have always been fascinated by Egyptian history, culture, and of course the Lore. The process of mummification is horrific and beautiful all at the same time. The care that was taken to prepare someone for the afterlife took time and talent.
I think of all the classic “Monsters”, the Mummy movies are my favorite. There is a good chance that at some point you have heard about the mummy’s curse. If you disturb the converse curse will follow you. This Movie is not that story. Take a look for yourself:
The first thing I saw by Lee Cronin was Evil Dead Rise. I’m a Huge Evil Dead fan and the idea of changing the course of the franchise was scary at first. Cronin nailed that movie in both writing and Directing and he is back for The Mummy. I’m not going to lie, The Mummy felt like it could be part of the Evil Dead franchise a little but I think that’s what helped make it so creepy.
The Mummy was released in theaters in April and then on digital in May. Where the cost to go to the movies has gotten out of hand, i pre-ordered this on digital as soon as I could. The weekend after it was released my wife and I watched it with my daughter who is slowly becoming a horror fan like me. I’m so proud.
This version of The Mummy steers away from a curse and instead focuses on a demonic presence that needs to be contained. The Cannon’s are living in Egypt with thier two children and a baby on the way. In broad daylight a parent’s worst nightmare happens. There daughter Katie is taken and all efforts are made searching for her to no avail. Eight years later, the Cannons have moved back to the United States, and are trying to live their lives when they get a call that Katie had been found. Katie was found in an acient sarcophagus.
As the broken family is reunited they struggle with helping their daughter re-aclimate to life. What they didn’t realize was hell came with Katie. An evil is spreading through the house and Katie is shedding layers of skin with Egyptian writing inscribed on the underside.
I loved this movie and it was so well done. The acting was fabulous, the story was engaging and there is a creeping feeling of dread throughout that really had me on the edge of my seat. I do love the fun Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz movies, but this is my favorite Mummy movie I have seen. I would love to see more like this in the future or maybe expanding into a franchise.
No shocker here, I don’t usually waste my time on movies I didn’t like. This is an absolute 🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃 movie and one I highly recommend. I have watched this a few times since it came out and know it will be a frequent re-watch.
