Victorian Psycho by Virginia Fritos

Victorian Psycho

I have found an amazing group of fellow book lovers on social media. This book kept popping up with all my friends who had the chance to review this prior to its release. As historical fiction isn’t my favorite, I reluctantly added this to my TBR list and figured I would get to it eventually. A trip out of town and a visit to an independent book store sped that up for me.

My family and I went to Madison, Wisconsin in April for my Daughter’s Regional Gymnastics competition. While there we found out it was National Independent Bookstore Day (April 26). To Apple Maps we searched for bookstores nearby. There were actually a lot of independent bookstores close to where were staying which was great, but we chose Lake City Books. It wasn’t the closest, but we liked the vibe their website had, the pictures posted online, and that it is a female owned and operated store.

I was impressed with the selection they had for horror books, and this was one of the few titles I didn’t already own in one format or another. Long story Short my wife and I bought a book each and a new sticker for her laptop.

Victorian Psycho was a book I knew nothing about and I think was the best way to go into this book. If you wish to do the same then skip to the rating and enjoy the ride.

With the name I immediately thought of American Psycho written by Bret Easton Ellis. This had a very similar theme of someone hiding who they are and masking their inner monologue. I will admit I enjoyed this more than American Psycho personally.

Winifred Notty arrives at the Ensor house responding to an add for a Governess. She is to be hired to care for and educate the children of the family. As Victorian and bland as this sounds, we the reader get to read what is really going on in Winifred’s head which is at times both disturbing and hilarious. Virginia Feito has these little quips at the beginning of each chapter. They all warn, or notify as to what the chapter is going to be about. I thought they were fantastic! This one particularly made me laugh when I got to it. Maybe I’m a little crazy but when you read this I’d be curious if this makes you laugh too knowing what just happened the chapter before.

This was a fun read. It’s short and I read it pretty quickly even for me. This was funny, intriguing, and disturbing. Where this wasn’t the best book I read it has definitely been top five. I give it a🥃🥃🥃🥃 and absolutely recommend it for anyone looking for something fun to escape in. This was my first read from Virginia Feito and I have already added her other book to my TBR list. Can’t wait to see what is next. I also highly recommend picking up a copy from your local independent book store.
