EC Comics: Blood Type by Corinna Bechko, Andrea Sorrentino and Dave Stewart

EC Comics Blood Type

I’m a walking contradiction on this review. Let me start by saying; I’m not a fan of Vampires. Vampires were kind of ruined for me by Twilight, and all the sparkle that followed. I have enjoyed movies like Near Dark, Lost Boys, and Jakob’s Wife, and Salem’s lot is still one of my Favorite Stephen King books. I’m more team werewolf, much more violent and less romantic. I also love the Native American Lore around Skinwalkers.

I absolute love EC Comics and even if it is a Vampire collection I’m going to read it. Sadly, I never got a chance to read the original Tales from the Crypt. Back then I was more obsessed with superheroes than horror villains. Since EC’s return with Epitaphs from the Abyss I have read almost all of their publications. I have not read Cruel World mainly because of timing. I wasn’t in a reading mood when that series launched.

When I saw this pop up on NetGalley for a review from Oni press I didn’t care what it was about I requested it. Needless to say the cover art peaked my interest a bit and I was glad I got it. Big thank you to Oni Press and NetGalley for the chance to read this.

This collection is a little different. Instead of the usual anthology style, this collection is all one story. This book is about Ada, a modern Vampire, that gets stranded out to see and is picked up buy a shipping vessel. Having exhausted her salty snacks, she has the captain pull into port at a tropical island. Landing in the best situation with a resort and ample food source coming and going, Ada’s new hunting grounds begin to become something darker and now the hunter, is the hunted.

This collection collects issues 1- 4 of Blood Type and is everything you’d expect from an EC Comics release. The art work is really good and the story is a lot of fun which even includes a lovable corpse narrator. The only thing that is really different is that this is one story instead of at least 2 different stories per issue.

Now I can’t do a graphic novel review without including some of my favorite Variant covers. That has sort of become a trend in these newer reviews:

I enjoyed this collection. The story was great, I just wish it was longer. What I mean is, if we just had 2 more issues in this collection to make the story deeper. That would have made this perfection. I do like that there was an ending and not a cliffhanger I have to wait a long time to get to. Overall this is a solid 🥃🥃🥃🥃 graphic novel and I highly recommend this to all my horror comic fans.
